Show Relevant Alternatives to Out of Stock Products Viewed

Introduction

One guaranteed way to disappoint your customers is to have them decide on the product they want to buy from your website, only to find out that it is out of stock. One way of dealing with out of stock items is to offer alternative product recommendations. 

Customers may be happy with a similar alternative to the product that is unavailable. Therefore, providing similar product options may be enough to satisfy the customer an get them to buy something else.


Alternative Options:

Another way of dealing with out of stock items is to offer to contact customers when the item is back in stock. Display a pop-up and ask unknown visitors to signup for email notification to be able to contact them when the item is back in stock. This will give you a chance to capture email addresses and a chance to start communicating with interested shoppers.





Example

A visitor views an out of stock item on your website. 

Show alternative product recommendations in a popup to motivate them to buy a similar item to the original.



How To Create This Playbook


1. Create a Targeting Rule

Create a rule to show product recommendations for out of stock products viewed.

  1. Go to Target > Targeting Rules > New Targeting Rule

  2. In the Title box enter a Name for your rule.

  3. From the Criteria List, select the   

    1. Custom Parameter
      Parameter Name: OM.inv
      Parameter Values: 0  

  4. Click Save to add new rule.            



2. Create a Targeting Action

  1. Go to Target > Targeting Actions > New Targeting Action

  2. In the Title box enter a Name for your targeting action.

  3. Type '*' in the "Pages to be Applied" field to enable this pop-up on all pages across your entire site.

  4. Select "Show Lightbox" for the Type.




  5. You have different options to add Content to your Lightbox:

    • Simply Copy and Paste your own Lightbox HTML to the Content area. 
      OR
    • Select from the built-in Templates and update content with the Design HTML option.


  6. Select a Date Range for the banner to display.

  7. Find and select the Targeting Rule you have created above from the Target Rules list.

  8. Click Save to add new action.
